TACTIC 1
Post-purchase one-click upsell
One extra offer after the card is charged — accepted with a single tap, no re-entry of payment details.
Why it works?
The buying decision is already made and the payment friction is already paid. A second offer here gets judged on its own merits instead of being added to a total the customer is still nervous about. Nothing the customer sees can send them back to reconsider the cart, because there is no cart left to reconsider.
Which offers to put there
- Add-on: products with an obvious accessory
- Upgrade version: when a higher tier exists
- Sample of new product: introducing a new line
- Mystery box: brands with personality and a real community

Thank-you page upsell
The most-revisited page in your store, and on most stores it is completely empty.
Why it works?
The impressions are effectively free, and they repeat. That makes this surface different from Play 1: it isn't a single flash of attention, it's a page that keeps existing. Which means it suits offers people need to think about — a refill, a bundle, a subscription — rather than impulse buys.

Tiered Reward
Effort rises as a goal gets closer. A single threshold captures that once and then goes quiet — the customer hits free shipping and checks out. A ladder keeps a next rung visible, so the pull doesn't switch off the moment the first reward is earned.

Cart Cross-sell with Add-on service & Complements
Two different offers wearing the same clothes: the thing that goes with it, and the service that protects it.
Why it works?
Complementary products finish the job the customer came to do. The blades for the razor, the case for the lens. The offer works because it removes a second trip, not because it's discounted.
Add-on services — warranty, gift wrap, faster delivery, installation — run on a completely different mechanism. They sell reassurance, carry almost pure margin, and consume no inventory. Most stores never build them at all.
Which offers to put there
- Services as shipping insurance, order protection, priority processing
- Related or complementary products

The Popup on ATC
A complementary offer fired the instant they hit Add to cart — the highest-intent second in the whole session.
Why it works?
The customer has just said yes. That's the most committed state they'll be in before checkout, and commitments tend to run on. It differs from the cart cross-sell in one important way: here the context is a single specific product, so the suggestion can be far more precise.

Checkout Upsells
The last surface before payment — and the one Shopify guards most closely.
Why it works?
By this point the customer has cleared every hurdle. Intent is about as close to certain as it gets, so a small, low-priced, one-second decision is close to pure profit. The same proximity is what makes it dangerous: there is no step after this one to recover a lost order.

Subscription Upgrade
Increase recurring revenue with subscription.
Why it works?
For consumables, the repeat purchase is going to happen anyway. A subscription just moves that decision forward to a moment when the customer is already convinced. Note the distinction that matters for this article: only prepaid, multi-delivery plans raise the value of this order. Subscribe-and-save usually lowers it.
