Change plan
Introduction
Merchants can change their plan directly from the Pricing popup. They can upgrade as their store grows, downgrade to a lower order limit, or switch back to the free Basic plan when they no longer need a paid plan.
All paid plan changes require approval on Shopify's billing page. GemUpsells never stores merchants' payment card details.
How to change your plan
Switch between paid plans
- Open Pricing.
- Drag the slider to select the plan you want.
-
Click the button on the plan card:
- Start 14-day free trial — available only to stores that have never used a free trial. See About 14-day Free Trial.
- Upgrade to N orders — move to a plan with a higher order limit.
- Downgrade to N orders — move to a plan with a lower order limit.
- GemUpsells redirects you to Shopify's billing approval page. Approve the change to activate the new plan. The Pricing page will then update to show the new plan with a Current plan badge.
Change plans before the current billing cycle ends
When a merchant changes plans before the current billing cycle ends, Shopify prorates the charge based on the price difference and the remaining days in the 30-day billing cycle. The current plan's charge is adjusted to reflect the new plan. See Shopify: Subscription billing.
Billing adjustments
| Plan change | How Shopify calculates the adjustment | Example: Change on day 15 of a 30-day cycle |
|---|---|---|
| Upgrade |
The merchant pays the price difference for the remaining days:
(New price − Old price) × Remaining days / 30
|
From $49 to $89: (89 − 49) × 15 / 30 = $20 additional charge |
| Downgrade |
The merchant receives a credit for the price difference over the remaining days:
(Old price − New price) × Remaining days / 30
|
From $89 to $49: (89 − 49) × 15 / 30 = $20 credit |
Order limits and usage after a plan change
Changing plans does not reset the current billing cycle or the store's order count.
| Plan change | What happens | Example: Change on day 15 of a 30-day cycle |
|---|---|---|
| Upgrade |
|
A merchant subscribes to the 2,000-order plan on day 1. By day 15, the store has
recorded 1,000 online store orders. The merchant upgrades to the 3,000-order plan.
After the upgrade:

| Downgrade |
|
A merchant subscribes to the 2,000-order plan on day 1. By day 15, the store has
recorded 1,000 online store orders. The merchant downgrades to the 500-order plan.
After the downgrade:
|
Additional charges and credits appear on the merchant's Shopify invoice.
Note: Changing plans is different from canceling a subscription. Switching to the free plan does not follow the proration rules described above. See Cancel Subscription.
Cancel subscription (MVP UI not yet available)
When a merchant cancels their GemUpsells subscription:
- The store immediately reverts to the Basic (Free) plan and its usage limits.
- No refund or credit is issued for the unused days in the current billing cycle. See Shopify: appSubscriptionCancel.
- All existing data, including funnels, widgets, and analytics, is preserved.
- Only the monthly online store order limit and AI credit allowance change to match the Free plan.
Downgrade to Free
- Drag the slider to Basic and click Downgrade.
- Review the confirmation modal.
- Confirm the change to switch to Basic (Free) immediately.
This action does not require approval on Shopify's billing page.

Important rules
- Switching to Basic cancels the paid subscription. The store reverts to the Basic plan's order limit.
- Recommended plan: GemUpsells recommends the next plan with a higher order limit than the store's current plan. When the store is approaching or has reached its order limit, the recommended plan appears on the Pricing page.
- Upgrading a paused store: If upsells have been paused because the store reached its order limit, upgrading immediately increases the limit and resumes upsells. The merchant does not need to wait for the next billing cycle.
- Billing adjustments: Shopify calculates charges and credits for paid plan changes based on the remaining days in the 30-day billing cycle. See About 14-day Free Trial.
Frequently asked questions
Q1. Why can't I see the free trial button?
Your store has already used its free trial. Each store can use a free trial only once, regardless of which plan it applies to.
Q2. How many days do I have left in my free trial?
Check the Free Trial card in the app sidebar to see the remaining trial days.
Q3. What happens if my free trial ends and I don't subscribe?
You will lose access to GemUpsells features until you subscribe to a plan.
Q4. I've reached my order limit mid-cycle, and my upsells have stopped. What should I do?
Upgrade to a plan with a higher order limit to resume upsells immediately, or wait until the first day of the next billing cycle, when your order count resets.
Q5. How am I charged when I change plans mid-cycle?
Shopify prorates the adjustment based on the remaining days in the current billing cycle. Upgrading incurs an additional charge, while downgrading may result in a credit.
Q6. Can I get another free trial if I reinstall the app?
No. Each store is eligible for only one free trial, even if the app is reinstalled.
