Pricing model

Introduction

GemUpsells follows a pay-as-you-grow pricing model. Merchants choose a plan based on their store's expected monthly online store order volume. Smaller stores can use GemUpsells for free, while larger stores pay more as their order volume grows.

All plans include access to the full feature set. The only differences are monthly order limits and AI credits.

GemUpsells offers two main plans: Basic (Free) and Grow. Basic is free forever, with no time limit. Grow offers multiple tiers, with pricing based on the store's monthly online store order volume.

All payments are processed through Shopify. GemUpsells charges appear on the store's Shopify bill. GemUpsells does not store payment card details or issue separate invoices.

How It Works

  • When a merchant first opens GemUpsells, their store is automatically placed on the Basic (Free) plan.
  • To upgrade, the merchant selects a tier based on their expected monthly order volume, clicks Subscribe, and approves the charge on Shopify's confirmation page.
  • Shopify bills the subscription every 30 days.
  • When the merchant cancels their subscription, the store immediately returns to the Basic (Free) plan.

Online Store Order Usage

The Home screen includes an Order Usage button that shows the number of orders generated through the online store.

Which orders count?

  • Each new order recorded by Shopify under the Online Store sales channel counts as one order, whether or not it includes an upsell. Orders created by other apps also count if Shopify records them under the Online Store sales channel.
  • Orders from other sales channels, such as POS (in-person sales), and draft orders do not count.
  • Cancelled, refunded, unpaid, and test orders still count.
  • Each order is counted in the month it was created.

Track Order usage status

Color Meaning
Black Normal usage.
Orange At least 70% of the order limit has been used, and more than half of the billing cycle has elapsed.
Red The order limit has been reached. Upsells are temporarily paused.

Clicking Order Usage opens a popover with detailed usage information, including:

  • The number of orders used versus the plan's order limit for the current cycle.
  • The number of days remaining until the usage limit resets.

5. Free Trial

New merchants can start a 14-day free trial on the Grow plan. See About 14-day Free Trial for how the trial works and when billing begins.

6. Billing

  • The 30-day billing cycle starts on the subscription date or when the free trial ends. The charge is added to the merchant's Shopify bill.
  • On the Shopify bill, the charge appears as "GemUpsell Paid Membership", followed by the plan name. Merchants can view billing details in Shopify Admin → Settings → Billing.
  • If a Shopify bill remains unpaid, Shopify may freeze the app charge and attempt to collect payment again. The merchant's subscription is retained, and the charge becomes active again once the Shopify bill is paid.
  • If a GemUpsells subscription charge is declined, expires, or is canceled in Shopify, the Grow plan ends immediately and the store returns to Basic (Free).

7. Changing Plans

Merchants can upgrade or downgrade between tiers at any time. See Change plan for how mid-cycle upgrades and downgrades are prorated.

8. Refunds

GemUpsells does not refund subscription fees that have already been charged. Canceling a subscription or uninstalling the app mid-cycle does not entitle the merchant to a refund or credit for the remaining days.

  • Exceptions: If a merchant is charged incorrectly, such as being charged twice or charged after canceling a subscription, they can email support@gemupsells.net from the store owner's email address. The email should include the store URL and the charge date. GemUpsells reviews each case individually.
  • Approved refunds or credits are processed through Shopify and appear in Shopify Admin → Settings → Billing. Shopify does not send a separate notification, so merchants should check their Shopify bill.
  • Refunds are limited to the subscription fees paid. Lost revenue and other costs are not covered.
  • Refunds are not available for issues caused by third parties, including Shopify.
  • Changing plans mid-cycle does not require a separate refund request. Shopify automatically calculates the applicable prorated charges or credits. See Changing Plans.

9. Support and Responsibilities

Merchant responsibilities

  • Maintain a valid payment method in Shopify.
  • Pay Shopify bills, including applicable taxes.
  • Settle any outstanding charges before canceling a subscription or uninstalling the app.

GemUpsells responsibilities

  • Refund liability is limited to the amount the merchant paid to GemUpsells in the month preceding the incident.
  • GemUpsells is not responsible for changes to or disruptions in Shopify's billing system.

10. Canceling and Uninstalling

See Cancel subscription and Uninstall GemUpsells for the steps and what happens to your funnel and data.

11. Shopify References

The following Shopify documentation covers the billing behavior described above.

Key Pricing Rules

  1. Online store orders determine plan usage. All orders from the Online Store sales channel count toward the limit, regardless of whether they include a GemUpsells offer. Orders from other channels, such as POS, do not count.
  2. Order usage resets on the first day of the next cycle. Usage is tracked by 30-day cycle rather than by the subscription's 30-day billing cycle. Reset dates are displayed in UTC, regardless of each merchant's local time zone.
  3. Reaching the order limit pauses all GemUpsells upsell functionality. If the store reaches its limit at any point during the month, nothing powered by GemUpsells continues to run on the storefront. Upsells resume when the usage limit resets or the merchant upgrades to a higher plan.
  4. Recommended plan: Recommend the next tier above the store's current order limit, provided that the tier can accommodate the store's order volume to date. If no available tier meets this requirement, recommend Max.
  5. Monthly billing only. Annual billing is not available. Subscriptions are billed every 30 days.
  6. The free plan is always named Basic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. How many orders are included in the Basic plan? How much do paid plans cost?

Refer to the current pricing displayed on the Pricing page.

Q2. Which orders count toward my limit?

All orders from the Online Store sales channel during the current calendar month count, whether or not they include GemUpsells offers. Orders created by other apps, test orders, and canceled orders also count.

Q3. What happens when I run out of AI credits? Where can I check my usage?

AI credit usage is displayed in each Widget Editor. If you run out of credits, wait until the next usage reset or upgrade your plan.

Q4. What should I do if I reach my order limit mid-cycle and my upsells stop showing?

Upgrade to a higher tier to increase your order limit and resume upsells on your storefront immediately, or wait until the first day of the next calendar month for your limit to reset.

Q5. Do unused AI credits or order capacity roll over?

No. Both online store order usage and AI credits reset to zero on the first day of each calendar month (UTC). Unused amounts do not roll over.

Q6. How am I charged if I change plans mid-cycle?

Shopify automatically prorates the charge for the remaining billing period. Upgrading to a higher tier may result in an additional charge, while downgrading may generate a credit.

Q7. Can I get a refund if I cancel my subscription?

No. Subscription fees that have already been charged are non-refundable, including when you cancel mid-cycle. If you were charged incorrectly, email support@gemupsells.net.

Q8. What happens to my funnel if I downgrade to Basic (Free)?

Your funnel configuration and status remain unchanged. Only your monthly online store order limit and AI credit allowance change.

Q9. What happens if my Shopify bill is unpaid?

Shopify may freeze the app charge and retry payment. Your subscription is retained, and the charge becomes active again after the bill is paid.

Q10. Can I pay annually?

Annual billing is not currently supported.

Q11. Can I get another free trial by reinstalling the app?

No. Each store is eligible for only one free trial.
